The 12th Meeting of the Asian Paleolithic Association
Sendai, Japan, June 20th - 24th, 2025

Dear colleagues,
The 12th meeting of the Asian Paleolithic Association (APA) will be held in person from June 20th to 24th, 2025, at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. The meeting will be organized by the Japanese Palaeolithic Research Association (JPRA) on behalf of the presidium of the APA. The meeting will feature a symposium, conference sessions, and a post-conference excursion. The title of the symposium is “Early Upper Palaeolithic in Asia: Commonality and diversity after the IUP”. Several invited experts in this topic will provide podium presentations. We are welcoming oral and poster presentations for conference sessions. Please note that we decided to extend the deadline for abstract submission to January 15th, 2025. All participants need to register for the meeting by March 1st, 2025. Upon request, the Organizing Committee sends a personal invitation for visa application. Please contact us (apajapan2025@gmail.com) as soon as possible, if you need an invitation letter.

3. Call for papers

We are welcoming oral and poster presentations for conference sessions. Official language of the meeting is English. To provide oral or poster presentations at the meeting, please submit an abstract (250 - 500 words) to the Program Committee (apajapan2025@gmail.com) using the Abstract Form by January 15th, 2025. We kindly ask you to meet the deadline, as all abstracts will be reviewed by the Program Committee. The oral presentations will be distributed to one of the appropriate conference sessions. Due to time constraints, only a limited number of oral presentations will be accepted. Therefore, the Program Committee may ask some authors to change from an oral to a poster presentation. Abstracts lacking in a clear description of the significance of the subject may not be accepted.

4. Registration

All participants must submit the Registration Form to the Organizing Committee (apajapan2025@gmail.com) by March 1st, 2025. Registration fee will cover abstract book, conference materials, morning and afternoon refreshments, lunch (June 21st, 22nd), welcome party, and farewell party. The registration fee should be paid at the registration desk. Please note that we accept only Japanese Yen in cash and reduction of the registration fee for students will be accepted only when you show your student ID.

5. Post-conference excursion

We are preparing a post-conference excursion on June 23nd. We will visit a famous microblade site at Kakuniyama and an Incipient Jomon cave site at Hinata, in Yamagata. Specialists will give a brief lecture about the Kakuniyama and Hinata Cave at the sites. We will also visit the Ukitamu Fudoki no Oka Archaeological Museum in Yamagata where rich lithic artifacts from early, middle to late Upper Palaeolithic sites are stored. We will have a great opportunity to look at these Upper Palaeolithic artifacts at the Ukitamu Fudoki no Oka Archaeological Museum. Participants who want to join the post-conference excursion need to check the box for the excursion participation in the Registration Form and send it to the Organizing Committee (apajapan2025@gmail.com) by March 1st, 2025. The excursion fee should be paid with the registration fee at the registration desk. Please note that we accept only Japanese Yen in cash and reduction of the excursion fee for students will be accepted only when you show your student ID.

6. Accommodation

There are plenty of hotels in city center of Sendai which are good locations accessing to the venue using the Sendai Subway (https://www.kotsu.city.sendai.jp/english/subway/norikata.html); for examples, hotels around subway stations of Sendai, Aoba-dori Ichibancho, and Omachi Nishi-koen (see the list below). We highly recommend booking a room as soon as possible because recently lots of tourists visit Sendai and most hotels will be fully booked soon.
